In July 2019, FSCJ’s South Campus Wilson Center for the Arts in conjunction with FSCJ’s Artist Series hosted its fourteenth annual high school summer musical theatre experience featuring Disney’s Newsies, based the 1992 musical film of the same name and inspired by historical events. In the summer of 1899, young boys and girls (many as young as five or six years old) known as "newsies" hawked newspapers on the streets of New York City. Faced with declining sales, mega-publishers Joseph Pulitzer and William Randolph Hearst decided to charge these children extra for the "papes" they were selling. The children organized a two-week strike which culminated in a significant compromise with two of the richest men in the world. The musical, adapted for stage by Harvey Fierstein, features songs by Alan Mencken and choreography by Kenny Ortega.
This show ran at FSCJ's Wilson Center for the Arts July 19-July 28, 2019.
