In April of 2008, FSCJ Dramaworks presented On the Razzle, Tom Stoppard’s adaptation of Einen Jux er sich machen (roughly translated “he’ll have himself a good time”) by Johann Nestroy (1801-62), who flourished as an actor and playwright in Vienna during the 1840s and ‘50s. Stoppard’s work is not a translation, but lifts from Nestroy the main characters and plot – a take on the mythic tale of two country mice escaping to town for a day or two of illicit freedom, mishaps, and discovery - from Nestroy while dropping most of the original dialogue. Set in Austria, the story follows two shop clerks who secretly follow their engaged boss to Vienna for a night on the town, then engage in increasingly absurd shenanigans to avoid being caught playing hooky.
This show ran at FSCJ's Wilson Center for the Arts April 17-20, 2008.
