In November of 2018, FSCJ DramaWorks, in conjunction with FSCJ’s American Sign Language (ASL)/English Interpreting programs, presented The Taste of Sunrise. Set in a town in the Deep South during the years of 1917-1918, Susan Zeder’s play follows on a young man named Tuc, deafened by a bout of Scarlet fever, as he grows up and adjusts to life without hearing. Sent by his father to a prominent Northern school touting the oralist approach (insisting that the Deaf conform to hearing culture), Tuc eventually learns sign language. The play is performed bilingually in English and ASL, and is part of a trilogy by Zeder including Mother Hicks, A Taste of Sunrise, and The Edge of Peace.
This show ran at FSCJ's Wilson Center for the Arts November 8-11, 2018.
