From the moment it opened its doors in August of 1966, the College has strived to provide engaging activities for its students. Even its chaotic first term, when students and faculty were making due in temporary conditions at a repurposed elementary school and old Naval housing, concluded with a lecture from nationally-renowned poet John Ciardi and a multi-day Winter Festival which culminating in a dance at the Civic Auditorium where students competed to develop a new dance step for a song by The International Rocking Wonders.
By the launch of Fall 1967, the College offered a variety of intramural sports and clubs for drama, surfing, and psychology; within another year, the Student Activities Offices had taken to keeping a master calendar to keep track of the approved events happening at the Cumberland, Southside, and (by January of 1969) San Diego Campuses. 1973 saw the launch of a publicly published version of the Student Activities Calendar, which appeared once a semester during the Fall and Winter (Spring) terms and was available for pickup at the Student Activities Offices. The Calendar included all major events - including those by the Artist, Lecture and Film Series, and College performing organizations - plus additional pertinent academic information and deadlines.
The Student Activities Calendar has maintained its publication schedule uninterrupted since its launch, though the name it appeared under has changed over the years. In 1997 it briefly appeared as the Student Planner and Event Guide before adopting the name Student Planner and Activities Guide in 1999; beginning in Spring 2006 it flirted with the title Student Activities Guide and Planner, then switched in Fall 2007 to Student Life Guide and Planner. As of Fall 2019, the publication rebranded as Life @ FSCJ, a fitting moniker for a publication which has offered a snapshot of life at the College for almost fifty years.
This collection represents all of the student activities calendars we have been able to locate. If you have information regarding existing copies of calendars published prior to 1980, or about the history of this publication, please contact Jennifer Grey at jennifer.grey@fscj.edu.
