Florida State College at Jacksonville is, and always has been, a wealth of data.
The College reports over 30,000,000 pieces of data annually. The majority of this data is related to its students, with over 177 distinct pieces of data collected about each student every term, but it also reports on personnel, facilities/capital outlay, and admissions. The information is collected and reported to both the Florida and United States Department of Education in accordance with state and federal statute.
Most of the College’s early efforts at data collection were in service of their attempts to receive accreditation from Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges, which they achieved in December of 1969 - a year ahead of the regular accreditation schedule. At first, collection and dissemination of data seems to have fallen to the catch-all department of Community Services. In 1968, FJC hired Kermit Miller as their first Director of Institutional Research, though he pulled double duty as the College’s Curriculum Coordinator. At the recommendation of a consulting firm, the College reorganized the Office of Institutional Research under new Vice President of Planning and Development (and future College President) Benjamin Wygal in 1969 and hired Dr. Jeffrey Stuckman that August as its new Director. A Kellogg Fellow and member of the Executive Committee of the Florida Junior Colleges Inter-Institutional Council, Stuckman would remain in that position for the next thirty years.
Throughout its existence the Office of Institutional Research, now known as Institutional Effectiveness, generated a plethora of reports, in addition to a Fact Book which offers an annual snapshot of the College. For nearly twenty years it also published its own newsletter, Institutional Research Notes, which can be found in the Newsletters collection on this site. While additional material such as reports or information from external consultants has been included here for organizational purposes, most of the material here comes from the desks of OIR/IE.
The information collected on this site is archival in nature, and not intended to reflect current data. For the most up-to-date information, please see the material provided by the College’s Office of Institutional Effectiveness at https://www.fscj.edu/discover/governance-administration/oiea/ie.
