In July 2017, FSCJ’s South Campus Wilson Center for the Arts in conjunction with FSCJ’s Artist Series hosted its 12th annual high school summer musical theatre experience featuring West Side Story, a Tony-winning riff on Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet with music by Leonard Bernstein and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim.
Set in a multiracial, blue-collar neighborhood in New York City’s Upper West Side during the mid 1950s in the, the musical explores the rivalry between the Jets and the Sharks, two teenage street gangs of different ethnic backgrounds. The members of the Sharks, from Puerto Rico, are taunted by the Jets, a white gang. Tony, a former member of the Jets and best friend of the gang's leader, Riff, falls in love with Maria, the sister of Bernardo, the leader of the Sharks. As you might expect from the source material, things end badly.
This show ran at FSCJ's Wilson Center for the Arts July 21-30, 2017.
